A bit of History
The eldest remains of the village of Escalante are situated in the mountain of Montehano, strategic place that allows the visual control of the Asón estuary area. Later on, this is where the Montehano Castle was built and the monastery was founded.
This municipality´s history is characterized by the state power of the Guevara family which had numerous confrontations within the village. Proof of that struggle are the Guevara tower and the Escalante´s Town Hall. This conflict did not stop the signature from the neighbours to create the brotherhood with the Merindad of Trasmiera, in 1579.
Diverse religious buildings are scattered through out the municipality; The roman shrine of San Román, from the year 1200, is one of them.
